Day 6
Wow, we have crammed in so much into such a short space of time, it's hard to believe we are only on Day 6.
I woke at 6am, so with just over 3 and a half hours sleep, today was going to be cruisy.
We pottered around and eventually dressed and showered and headed out to breakfast at Pret again. No healthy fruit for breakfast today, we needed fatty comfort food. So we scoffed a sausage and egg brioche and a coffee each and started to feel human. H was keen for a slow day today too, so we agreed to meet at Camden Market at midday-ish so off we went. It is pretty much the same as it was 15 years ago when we were last here. Lots of grungy stalls selling cheap knock-off, but also some quirky interesting stalls selling funky t-shirts and some quite cool crafts. H bought a canvas bag with a Japanese art style wave print, Joe bought a couple of t-shirts, one with an AT-AT (from Star Wars) on the front. We mooched around soaking it in, considered buying a pair of converse boots which started white but could be hand painted in 30 minutes with anything from a huge range of choices in a catalogue. Some that appealed were album art (Pink Floyd's The Wall, Queen etc) and they were reasonably priced (cost 40 pounds) but in the end decided against it. Once we were done there, we headed back into the city to revisit Carnaby St for Joe's benefit and mooched around some of the shops there, cherry picking favourites from the previous day. I went back to Liberty to buy the Zebra jug, but alas, it was gone. A salutary lesson on buying it when you see it. Even if you get the chance to go back, it may not still be there. (I have since been able to order it online, to be delivered to H and she will bring it up to Manchester next week, assuming it's delivered on time).
We had lunch at a place called Mother's Mash, which was really yummy. The concept is you pick from various types of mashed spud (butter, cheese, onion, bubble and squeak) add either sausages or pie, with options such as Pork and ale, and then add gravy which also has a whole bunch of options to choose from. It really was delicious and hit the spot, and only about 10 pounds per meal. I may already have mentioned that you spend a pound like you spend a dollar, so if you are earning pounds, that's about 10 bucks for a yummy dinner.
By now it was getting to be late afternoon, so we agreed one last stop at Uniqlo ( a shop selling all manner of cheap clothing were Joe has been able to buy pants off the shelf without having to be taken up) and then call it quits for the day.
Heather headed off home and so did we, with a view to having a quick rest and then we would come back into town for some night time photography.
The Christmas lights are up along Regent St and Piccadilly and really are spectacular. We spent about two hours wandering around taking photos and then headed back home, and were in bed by about 9.30pm. Not a bad effort considering how little sleep we've had for our jet-lagged bodies. Having said that, Joe has the beginnings of a cold, not unexpected really.
